  • PROFILE - DR. FRANK FRANZAK

    Research

    Franzak’s research centers on applying marketing perspectives to innovation/new product development and global business. Ongoing topics and applications include: incorporating design benefits into new products, brand engagement related to product features and their value, and export marketing practices. His research has been published in major marketing and management journals, and he has regularly presented at the major conferences in his field.

     

    Bio

    Frank Franzak is an Associate Professor of Marketing in the VCU School of Business. Dr. Franzak has been at VCU’s Marketing Department since 1986. Prior to his appointment at VCU, he was on the faculty of Boston College School of Management. His time at VCU has been characterized by a number of administrative appointments. He served as Marketing Department Chair from July 2002 through June 2008, as Curriculum Coordinator for the VCU Executive MBA program from August 1998 to July 2001 and again from August 2015 – June 2018. From 2012 to 2015, he served as Coordinator for VCU da Vinci Center Master of Product Innovation program. From August 2002 to the present time, he is Faculty Advisor to the Master of Science in Business, Global Marketing Management Concentration. Professionally, he served on the Board of Directors of the American Marketing Association’s Global Marketing Special Interest Group, twice in the position of Board Chair and then Immediate Past Chair, and once as the Communications Officer. He has been active with consultative projects in the innovation/product launch area, facilitating projects that have involved student teams working with the Virginia Biosciences Commercialization Center and the VCU Office of Technology Transfer. Similar student project efforts in the global arena collaborated with the international trade office of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.

He is an Associate Professor of Information Systems at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), past President of the International Data Management Association (DAMA-I) and Associate Director of the MIT International Society of Chief Data Officers. As a practicing data consultant, professor, author and researcher, he has studied DM for more than 30 years. International recognition has come from assisting more than 150 organizations in 30 countries including some of the world’s most important. He is a dynamic presence at events and author of 10 books and multiple publications, including his latest on Data Strategy. Peter also hosts the longest running and most successful webinar series dedicated to DM (hosted by dataversity.net). In 1999, he founded Data Blueprint, a consulting firm that helps organizations leverage data for profit, improvement, competitive advantage and operational efficiencies.

    BIO

    Associate Professor of Information Systems, former Chairman of the Department of Information Systems specializing in software project management, business reengineering, end-user computing, and the design and implementation of application systems. His teaching and research interests have resulted in the creation of the Information Systems Research Institute at VCU. He has provided management consulting in the development of the request for proposals, business reengineering, selection of software product and contract negotiations for an integrated student information system for Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr.Wynne has published articles in the International Journal of Information Management, International Journal of Production Research, Journal of Operational Research Society, Interface: The Computer Education Quarterly, and The Proceedings of the Decision Sciences Institute. He has held memberships in Decision Sciences Institute, Information Resource Management Association, Data Processing Management Association and the Association for Systems Management. He was the Program Chair for the 1994 regional meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute; 1995-96 President of the Southeast Region of the Decision Sciences Institute; and 1996-97 Past President of SEDSI.

    RESEARCH

    The core of my research program is the use of optimization to design new methods for data analysis. I also work in areas applying these methods to data, and in other areas of applied optimization. Application areas include human microbiome research, modeling of bacterial metabolism, public sector operations, scheduling, manufacturing, and inventory management.
